The Drum Never Dies: Sabu Jiyana’s Resurrection Comes Home to Langa

On 5 April, Sabu Jiyana returns home to Guga S’thebe Arts & Culture Centre with a powerful cultural experience titled Resurrection, presented through the Matimba Project.

This is more than a performance. It is a revival.

Resurrection is a call to reconnect with African Indigenous knowledge systems, to revive sacred instruments, and to bring the deep, ancestral sound of the matimba back to the people. Rooted in rhythm and heritage, the project honors traditions that have long carried the heartbeat of African storytelling and spirituality.

For Jiyana, the event carries a special meaning. Born in Langa, this performance marks a homecoming—a return not only to place but also to purpose.

Audiences can expect an evening that blends music, heritage, and cultural memory. Through rhythm and sound, Resurrection seeks to remind communities that their traditions are not relics of the past but living forces that continue to shape identity and belonging.
